How to Use PancakeSwap: A Step-by-Step Swap Guide

A safety-first walkthrough for selecting tokens, reading a quote, checking approvals and confirming a swap from your own wallet.

PancakeSwap lets you exchange tokens from a compatible wallet without first depositing them into a centralized exchange. The interface prepares the transaction, but your wallet remains the place where you review and sign it.

That sounds simple, and usually it is. The part worth slowing down for is the quote. Token contracts, network selection, approvals, slippage, price impact and gas all affect what you are about to authorize.

This guide walks through a standard same-chain swap. The exact buttons and supported networks can change, so use the current interface and check the final wallet request before signing.

What you need before using PancakeSwap

You need four things:

  1. A compatible wallet that you control.
  2. The correct network selected in that wallet.
  3. The token you want to sell.
  4. Enough of the network's native token to pay gas.

For example, a swap on BNB Chain normally requires BNB for gas, even if neither side of the trade is BNB. A token balance alone does not pay the network fee.

Before opening the swap page, verify the official domain. Then confirm the token contract using the project's own site or a trusted block explorer. Symbols are not unique, and a convincing logo does not prove that a token is genuine. Our guide to checking the token, network and contract covers that process in more detail.

How to make a swap on PancakeSwap

1. Open the swap interface and connect your wallet

Open PancakeSwap's official swap interface and choose your wallet connection method. Your wallet should show which site is requesting the connection.

Connecting a wallet does not move funds by itself. It lets the site read public account information and prepare requests. A token approval or swap only happens after a separate signature or transaction confirmation.

2. Select the network

Make sure the network shown by PancakeSwap matches the network in your wallet. The same token symbol can exist on several chains, and balances are chain-specific.

If the interface asks you to switch networks, read the request instead of accepting it automatically. You should know which chain you are entering and whether you hold its native gas token.

3. Choose the token you are selling

Select the input token and confirm its contract address. If you paste a contract for an unlisted token, treat the warning as a reason to verify the asset, not as a routine screen to dismiss.

Enter the amount. Avoid using the entire native-token balance if that asset is also required for gas. Leaving no gas can prevent the transaction from being submitted.

4. Choose the token you want to receive

Select the output token and verify its network and contract. PancakeSwap will produce a live estimate based on the liquidity and route available at that moment.

The official PancakeSwap trading guide follows the same basic sequence: connect, select the pair and amount, review the transaction details, approve the token when necessary, and confirm the swap in the wallet.

5. Read the quote before you approve anything

Do not judge a swap only by the large output number. Check:

  • the exchange rate;
  • the route or pool path;
  • price impact;
  • slippage tolerance;
  • minimum received;
  • liquidity-provider or interface fees, when shown;
  • estimated network fee.

Minimum received is especially important. It is the lower bound the transaction accepts under its slippage settings. A quote can change between preview and execution because pools and network conditions keep moving. See slippage, price impact and gas if any of these fields are unfamiliar.

6. Approve the token if required

An ERC-20 style token may need an approval before a smart contract can spend the amount used in the swap. That approval is different from the swap itself.

Read the spender, token and allowance in your wallet. A limited allowance reduces exposure compared with an unlimited approval, although it may require another approval later. Never approve a contract you cannot identify.

The first approval may create one on-chain transaction. The swap then creates another, so you can pay gas twice.

7. Confirm the swap in your wallet

Once the quote and approval are acceptable, choose Swap and inspect the wallet confirmation. Check the network, destination contract, amount and estimated gas.

After you sign, the transaction is submitted to the network. PancakeSwap's swap documentation explains that the trade is carried out through the connected wallet and requires sufficient liquidity for the pair.

Use the transaction hash to follow it on the correct block explorer. Do not repeat the swap just because the interface takes a moment to refresh. First verify whether the original transaction is pending, confirmed or failed.

What does PancakeSwap's router do?

A router searches the eligible PancakeSwap pools for a path between the input and output assets. A direct pool is not always the only possible route. The protocol may use an intermediate asset or combine liquidity types when its current router supports them.

That does not make every quote optimal across the whole market. It means the interface evaluates the sources included in its own routing system. The route, fees and output are specific to the current amount and network.

Common reasons a PancakeSwap swap fails

Insufficient gas

You have the token to sell but not enough native currency for network fees. Add enough gas without sharing a seed phrase or private key with anyone.

Price moved beyond the allowed slippage

The pool price changed before execution and the transaction could not meet the minimum received. Refresh the quote. Increasing slippage blindly can make a poor execution easier, so first assess liquidity and price impact.

The token has transfer restrictions

Some tokens charge transfer taxes, block selling, restrict addresses or contain other custom logic. A failed trade can be a warning sign. Verify the contract instead of repeatedly raising slippage.

Wrong network or token contract

The wallet and interface are on different networks, or a lookalike token was selected. Compare the contract address character by character.

Pending approval

The token approval has not confirmed yet. The swap cannot use the allowance until the network records it.

PancakeSwap or a liquidity aggregator?

PancakeSwap routes within its supported protocol liquidity. A liquidity aggregator has a different job: it compares eligible routes from multiple sources before preparing a transaction.

Latin Link is a non-custodial liquidity aggregation interface. Its routing can consider eligible sources through OpenOcean. It does not guarantee a better outcome, because availability, price impact, gas, fees and slippage change for every quote. The useful habit is to compare liquidity routes before a swap and evaluate the complete result, not just the headline rate.

In either case, you still need to verify the network, token contracts, approval and wallet confirmation yourself.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a PancakeSwap account?

A standard on-chain swap uses a compatible wallet rather than a conventional exchange account. Network or product access can still depend on location, wallet support and the current interface.

Does connecting my wallet let PancakeSwap take my tokens?

A connection alone does not transfer tokens. An approval can give a smart contract spending permission, and a signed swap can move assets. Read every request in your wallet.

Why did I receive less than the first estimate?

Quotes are dynamic. Pool price, route, slippage, price impact, fees and gas can change between preview and confirmation. Compare the executed amounts with the minimum-received setting and the transaction record.

Can I swap any token?

Only if the network, contract and available liquidity support the transaction. A token appearing in a list does not establish quality or safety.

Is PancakeSwap the same as a wallet?

No. It is an interface for interacting with on-chain protocols. Your wallet holds the keys and signs the transaction.
